Focus: Mental Health of Mental Health Professionals Time: 9.30 am to 4 pm
Date: 3rd of January, 2012 Venue: Sampurna Montfort College, Bangalore, India
Update on 2nd January 2012: 7 to 10 participants can register on spot and participate in the experiential workshop on meditation
Organizer: Department of Counselling and Psychology, Sampurna Montfort College, Bangalore, India
Description of the workshop:
Mental health professionals, by the very nature of their jobs, have frequent encounters with intense emotional experiences of their clients. Research has established that stress and burnout ultimately affect their own health. However do professionals pay attention to their own mental health and wellbeing? Global evidence suggests that they do not take care of themselves the way they suggest their clients to do! Stress and burnout in mental health professionals have been receiving attention in the recent past in the Indian context.
This workshop is envisaged as a concept building process that is hoped to draw attention to the need for adequate recognition of the mental health needs of mental health professionals. A key component is a panel discussion on this concept. Eminent practitioners in the field, young professionals and trainees from the different mental health professions will form the panel. The participants of this workshop will be crucial contributors towards building the base for further research in this area. This will be followed by concurrent workshops aimed at providing exposure to the participants on different de-stressing therapeutic techniques. The participants can choose from Meditation and alternative healing techniques, art therapy and creative movement therapy. The focus is on mental health professionals giving adequate attention to their own mental health and actively seeking to enhance the same. As is said, ‘There is no health without mental health!’
